Buyer's guide
How to choose the best NPPE prep platform
A neutral checklist for comparing NPPE courses and apps, the red flags worth walking away from, and how NPPE Pro answers each point, including what it lacks.
Ten things to look for
Use this list on any course, app or question bank, including this one.
All six sections, weighted like the exam
The blueprint gives Professional Practice 27 to 32 questions and Professionalism 7 to 10. A course that is mostly ethics, or mostly law, leaves gaps where the marks are.
Timed, full-length mock exams
At least one full mock of about 110 questions on a 2.5-hour timer, so you rehearse pacing and stamina as well as knowledge.
An explanation for every option
Not only the right answer. On a four-option exam, knowing why each wrong option is wrong is how you learn to resist the tempting one.
Review that adapts to your misses
Questions you get wrong should come back after a gap until you get them right, not sit in a list you never revisit.
A plan to your sitting
A schedule counted back from your exam date tells you what to do today and whether you are on pace. A pile of content does not.
Readiness measured from evidence
A readiness signal should come from your own answers across every section, not from hours logged or pages opened.
Works on a phone
Most preparation happens in short gaps in the day. Check that lessons and questions work on a phone and that progress follows you between devices.
Transparent pricing and a free trial
Prices should be on the website before you sign up, and you should be able to try the product itself before paying.
Clear independence from regulators
A prep provider should say plainly that it is independent. Be wary of any that implies a regulator's backing or access to the exam.
Real reviews from named candidates
Look for reviews on a platform the provider does not control, such as Google. Unnamed quotes on a sales page tell you little.
Red flags worth walking away from
Some claims should end your interest in a provider, because no prep company can honestly make them. The NPPE's questions are confidential, the pass mark is a scaled score of 65 set through the exam's own standard-setting process, and no official pass rate is published.
Treat each of the claims below as a warning sign rather than a selling point. A provider willing to stretch the truth on its sales page may be just as loose with the details of Canadian law and ethics in its course material.
- A promise that you will pass. No provider can know how you will do on the day.
- Claims to have real exam questions. NPPE questions are confidential. Practice questions can only be written to the published blueprint.
- Pass rates you cannot check. With no official NPPE pass rate to compare against, a provider's own figure cannot be verified.
- Implied backing from a regulator. Wording that suggests a regulator or the exam administrators stand behind a commercial course is a reason to look closer and check with the regulator.
- A 65 percent pass mark. The NPPE's pass mark is a scaled score of 65, which is not 65 percent. A provider that confuses the two has not read the scoring rules.
- No prices until you book a call. Pricing should be on the website.

Questions to ask before you pay
Ask these of any provider. A good one will answer each in a sentence or two.
- 1
Can I try it before I pay?
A trial of the real product, not a demo video, lets you judge the questions and explanations for yourself.
- 2
How are the questions written and kept current?
Look for a clear answer on how questions map to the published blueprint and to Canadian practice.
- 3
How is my readiness measured?
Ask what the readiness signal is based on. Your own accuracy across all six sections is evidence; time spent is not.
- 4
What happens if my sitting moves?
Check whether your access and progress survive a change of date, and what it costs to continue.
- 5
What does each plan include, and how do I cancel?
Know whether you are paying monthly or once, which features each plan includes, and how cancelling works.
- 6
Does it work on my phone?
Try a lesson and a few questions on your phone during the trial, the way you will actually study.

Questions people ask
More answers in the NPPE FAQ.
Is an NPPE course better than an app?
It depends on how you learn. A live course gives you an instructor and a fixed schedule; a self-paced platform gives you flexibility and more practice per hour of study. You can also pair a self-paced platform for daily practice with the suggested textbooks for depth. Choose the format you will actually keep up for several weeks.
Can any prep provider give me real NPPE questions?
No. NPPE questions are confidential, so a provider that claims to have real exam questions is either mistaken or misleading you. Good practice questions are written to the published blueprint and explain the principle behind each answer, which prepares you for questions you have not seen.
What should I check during a free trial?
Check the parts you will rely on most. Answer a set of questions and read the explanations for the ones you got wrong, try a lesson on your phone, see how the plan fits your sitting date, and look at what a mock exam report shows. Then decide whether to pay, and for which plan.
How is NPPE Pro different from a question bank?
A question bank gives you questions. NPPE Pro gives you a plan: it counts back from your exam date, teaches each topic in short lessons, brings back the questions you miss until you get them right twice in a row, and shows your readiness by domain so you know when you are ready to book.
Is NPPE Pro affiliated with my regulator or the NPPE?
No. NPPE Pro is an independent study platform built by CertNova, the team behind CBA Pro and competencybasedassessment.ca. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or approved by any engineering or geoscience regulator, or by the administrators of the NPPE.
What is the NPPE pass rate?
No official national pass rate is published. The exam is scored against a fixed standard, with no set share of candidates meant to pass or fail at a sitting. Pass rates quoted by prep companies or online forums are not official figures.
Are the mock exams like the real NPPE?
They follow its shape. Each of the 4 mock exams is a full-length set of multiple choice questions on a 2.5-hour timer, covering the same six sections as the NPPE blueprint. Afterwards you get a report by topic and an explanation for every answer. The real exam's questions are confidential, so no prep provider can show them to you.
Which NPPE Pro plan should I choose?
Choose by where you are starting from. Full Prep is for starting from scratch: lessons on every topic, practice questions, flashcards, the mind map and all 4 mock exams. Practice and Exam is for people who have read the material and need questions and mocks. Exam Only is the 4 timed mock exams with their reports, for the final weeks.
Your first session takes fifteen minutes.
Tell NPPE Pro your sitting and it builds the plan. The 14-day trial starts from your first finished lesson, and no card is needed.
