Writing the NPPE again

NPPE retake prep that starts with the areas that cost you marks

You know the format and the clock now. Your mastery report names the areas to fix first. Tell NPPE Pro you have written the NPPE before, and your plan leans on practice and timed mock exams.

If paying for prep a second time worries you, NPPE Safety Net and NPPE Guided both include the Safety Net. Complete everything before your sitting. Don't pass? Get your money back and 3 more months to prepare again.† The conditions sit under the price below. Read the Safety Net terms.

What happens after a fail

Your result comes from your regulator, not from the exam administrator, and it reaches you at least a week before the registration deadline for the next sitting. A fail comes with a mastery report that marks content areas as Not mastered or Borderline mastered. The NPPE's own advice is to focus your study on the areas it names. You don't need to master every area, and the report can't be turned back into a score.

The bar doesn't move for a second attempt: first-time and repeat takers are graded to the same standard. To write again, re-apply through your regulator before its deadline and pay the exam fee again. How many attempts you get is up to your regulator.

Why a second attempt is a different job

On a first attempt you learn the material and the exam at the same time. On a retake you already know the format, the clock and the kind of scenarios the NPPE uses. What is left is the content areas your report flagged, and that is a narrower job.

Rereading the textbook from page one, or redoing a question bank in the same order, gives your strongest areas as much time as your weakest. Put the hours where the report says the marks went, and check your pace on a timed mock well before the final weeks.

How NPPE Pro runs a retake

NPPE Pro's first question is whether you have written the NPPE before. Answer yes, and your road to exam day gives less time to first-pass lessons and more to practice questions and mock exams.

Its 6 domains follow the 6 sections of the NPPE blueprint, the same areas your mastery report uses. So you can start practice in the domain the report marked Not mastered and work outward from there.

  • Practise one domain at a time, or let NPPE Pro pick your weakest topics
  • A question you miss comes back until you answer it right twice in a row
  • Each full mock runs on the 2.5-hour clock and ends with a report by topic
  • Your readiness score shows coverage and accuracy in each domain, so one good session never reads as ready

A retaker's review, in his own words

Omer used NPPE Pro after three attempts at the NPPE. This is his Google review, quoted in full. It is one person's experience. No prep plan can promise a pass.

  • “Before using NPPE Pro by CertNova, I was very frustrated. I had already attempted the NPPE exam 3 times, and the only thing left in my P.Eng. process was passing this exam. I had tried studying from other vendors, from books, even using ChatGPT, but I still struggled. With NPPE Pro, the practice questions, flashcards, and review tools helped me focus on my weak areas and keep practicing in a more structured way. What also stood out to me was that the NPPE Pro CertNova team personally reached out, listened to my situation, and helped guide me when I had only a few days left before the exam. This time, I passed successfully. If you feel stuck or you have failed before, I recommend NPPE Pro by CertNova. It can help you study faster, focus better, and feel more confident before the exam.”

Which plan fits your retake

Choose by how far away your sitting is and how much you need to relearn. Every plan has the 580-question bank on repeat, flashcards and the readiness score. The Safety Net asks you to finish every lesson, question, flashcard and mock before your sitting, so it suits a sitting with weeks to spare.

  • Under three weeks to your sitting, or you only need practice: NPPE Practice Questions, $97 CAD for 1 month. Questions and flashcards on every topic and one timed mock exam of 100 questions, with no lessons.
  • Your next sitting or later, with areas to relearn: NPPE Safety Net, $197 CAD for 3 months. It adds lessons on all 52 topics, all 4 mock exams and the mind map, and includes the Safety Net. Complete everything before your sitting. Don't pass? Get your money back and 3 more months to prepare again.†
  • A topic you want to talk through with a person: NPPE Guided, $297 CAD for 4 months. Everything in NPPE Safety Net, plus two 30-minute, one-on-one sessions with a P.Eng. on any NPPE topic you choose. Guided includes the Safety Net, on the same terms.

Questions people ask

More answers in the NPPE FAQ.

How is NPPE retake prep different from preparing the first time?

It is narrower. A first attempt means learning the material and the exam together. On a retake you know the format and the clock, and your mastery report names the content areas to study first. Spend most of your time practising those areas, sit a timed mock early to check your pace, and come back to your stronger areas through mixed practice.

How long do I have to prepare for an NPPE retake?

Six weeks or more, if you register for the next sitting. Your result reaches you at least a week before the next registration deadline, and on the published 2026 and 2027 calendar those deadlines fall five to seven weeks before the sitting. If your report flagged several areas, a later sitting gives you more weeks. The exam dates page lists them.

Can I use my NPPE mastery report in NPPE Pro?

Yes, by hand. NPPE Pro doesn't read the report for you. Its 6 domains follow the 6 sections of the NPPE blueprint, the areas the report uses, so you can open practice in each domain it marked Not mastered or Borderline mastered. Once you have answered questions there, your readiness score shows whether those domains are closing.

Which NPPE Pro plan is best for a retake?

Choose by time. Under three weeks to your sitting, NPPE Practice Questions ($97 CAD) gives you questions on every topic and one timed mock. For your next sitting or later, NPPE Safety Net ($197 CAD) adds the lessons, all 4 mocks and the Safety Net. Complete everything before your sitting. Don't pass? Get your money back and 3 more months to prepare again. NPPE Guided ($297 CAD) adds two 30-minute sessions with a P.Eng. and includes the Safety Net too.

Can NPPE Pro promise I'll pass my retake?

No. No prep plan can promise a result, and first-time and repeat takers are graded to the same standard. What NPPE Pro controls is the process: practice aimed at the areas your report flagged, timed mocks and a readiness score by domain. The Safety Net is about your money, not your result. Complete everything before your sitting. Don't pass? Get your money back and 3 more months to prepare again.

How does the Safety Net money-back promise work?

The Safety Net comes with NPPE Safety Net and NPPE Guided, bought from 29 September 2026. Before your sitting, finish every lesson, answer every practice question, review every flashcard and complete all 4 mock exams. Your scores don't matter. Sit the NPPE while your plan is active, or within 30 days of it ending. If your official result is a fail, email it to support@nppepro.ca within 30 days. You get your money back (everything you paid for the plan) and a new 3-month Safety Net period to prepare again, which you can start any time within 12 months. One claim per person. It is a promise about your money, not about your result: no prep plan can promise a pass. Read the Safety Net terms.

What is the pass mark for the NPPE?

The pass mark is a scaled score of 65, which is not the same as 65 percent. Scores are scaled so that a pass means the same thing at every sitting, and results are reported only as pass or fail. Candidates who fail receive a report showing their performance by content area.

Is NPPE Pro affiliated with my regulator or the NPPE?

No. NPPE Pro is an independent study platform built by CertNova, the team behind CBA Pro and competencybasedassessment.ca. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or approved by any engineering or geoscience regulator, or by the administrators of the NPPE.
