Learning path

NPPE lessons by domain, in cards you can finish on a break

564 short lesson cards across 52 topics and 6 domains. Read a few, answer 10 questions on them, and move on.

The NPPE Pro learning path, with lessons grouped by exam domain.

Six domains, 19 units, 52 topics

The learning path follows the six sections of the NPPE blueprint. Each domain is split into units, and each unit into topics: 19 units and 52 topics in all, from codes of ethics and conflicts of interest to contracts, tort, insurance and the discipline process. The path shows your mastery in each domain and how many topics of each unit you have done.

Nothing on the path is locked because it comes later. The current unit is simply the first one you have not finished, and you can open any unit or topic your plan covers, in any order. Most people follow the order; some start with the domain they find hardest, or the one their readiness score flags.

The domains are not the same size, and neither is the exam. Law for Professional Practice has 17 topics and Professional Practice 12, matching the two sections that carry the most questions on the NPPE. Professional Law and Regulation of Members and Discipline have four topics each.

What each domain covers

The six areas the NPPE tests, as the learning path organises them.

  • 6 topics

    Professionalism

What it means to hold a licence: the duty to the public, competence, and acting within your expertise.

  • 9 topics

    Ethics

Codes of ethics, conflicts of interest, whistleblowing, and the dilemmas the exam builds questions around.

  • 12 topics

    Professional Practice

Sealing documents, supervision, quality management, risk, the environment and sustainability in practice.

  • 17 topics

    Law for Professional Practice

Contracts, tort and negligence, tendering, insurance, employment, intellectual property and dispute resolution.

  • 4 topics

    Professional Law

The acts and regulations that create the professions and give regulators their powers.

  • 4 topics

    Regulation of Members and Discipline

Licensing, complaints, investigations, discipline hearings and the penalties regulators can impose.

Five kinds of lesson card

A lesson is a handful of cards on one topic. Each card does one job.

  • Definition

The term defined in a sentence or two, short enough to recall under time pressure.

  • Key rule

The principle that decides questions, such as the duty to the public coming before an employer or client.

  • Scenario

A short workplace situation that shows the rule in use, the way exam questions are framed.

  • Example

A concrete case that makes an abstract idea easier to remember and to recognize in a question.

  • Exam tip

A short pointer on how the topic shows up in exam questions, and what to look for in the wording.

What a lesson session looks like

About 15 minutes, from the first card to the last answer.

  1. A few cards on one unit

Each session opens with a few lesson cards. The next session on the same unit moves on to the next cards rather than repeating these.

  2. Then 10 questions

Questions on what you just read, with every option explained. Miss one and it comes back a few questions later in the same session.
An NPPE Pro practice question on ethics, answered, with the explanation for each option.
  3. Your readiness moves

The topic counts as studied, and your answers feed the readiness score for its domain, so you can see the first pass adding up.

Questions people ask

More answers in the NPPE FAQ.

What is in a lesson?

A lesson is a handful of short cards on one topic: a definition, the rule that applies, a scenario showing the rule in use, and an exam tip. Then you answer questions on it straight away. NPPE Pro has 564 lesson cards across 52 topics.

Do I still need the textbook?

Not to get started. NPPE Pro's lessons cover every topic the NPPE tests in short pieces you can study daily. The regulators' recommended textbooks remain the authoritative reference, and they are worth having nearby when you want more depth on a topic the readiness score flags.

Does NPPE Pro cover my province?

Yes. The NPPE is one national exam, so the same preparation applies whichever regulator you are applying to. The exam tests principles that are common across provinces, and that is what the lessons teach. Your regulator's own act and bylaws are worth reading alongside.

What sections does the NPPE cover?

The NPPE blueprint has six sections: Professionalism (7 to 10 questions), Ethics (17 to 21), Professional Practice (27 to 32), Law for Professional Practice (23 to 28), Professional Law (7 to 10), and Regulation of Members and Discipline Processes (7 to 10). Professional practice and law together make up more than half the exam.

Do I have to study the NPPE domains in order?

No. The learning path suggests an order and marks the first unit you have not finished as current, but nothing is locked because it comes later. You can open any unit or topic your plan covers. Many candidates start with the domain their readiness score shows as weakest, or with law if it is new to them.

How long does it take to get through all the lessons?

It depends on your runway. The study plan budgets about 15 minutes a topic for the first pass and spreads the 52 topics across the learning stage, which takes about half the time before the final week. The pace check then shows how many topics a week that needs, and whether the study hours you have cover it.

When does a topic count as done?

A topic counts as studied once you finish a lesson session on it, and a unit is done once every topic in it has been studied. Your answers keep counting after that: a topic reaches mastered on your readiness score at 70 percent accuracy or better, and the questions you miss keep coming back until you get them right twice in a row.

Can I use NPPE Pro on my phone?

Yes. NPPE Pro runs in the browser on any phone, tablet or computer, and your progress follows your account. Lessons and practice sessions are sized for a phone, so a session fits on a commute or a lunch break. There is nothing to install.

Your first session takes fifteen minutes.

Tell NPPE Pro your sitting and it builds the plan. The 14-day trial starts from your first finished lesson, and no card is needed.
